Sarah Shachat
Writer & Producer
Hi y'all.
I'm Sarah Shachat, a writer, editor, and podcast producer from New Orleans, even though I don't have a fun accent, now living in New York City. I'm probably best known in the world of fiction podcasting for my work as a staff writer, producer, and occasional director on the audio drama series WOLF 359. Definitely that's where people have gotten tattoos of words I wrote on their bodies – which is still super surreal and I'm not over it, thank you for asking.
I also co-wrote the audio mini-series TIME:BOMBS, co-wrote and co-directed the audio fiction anthologies ZERO HOURS and UNSEEN, all working with my friends from college, Gabriel Urbina and Zach Valenti. Together the three of us co-founded Long Story Short Productions, which you should definitely check out if you're in need of podcast development, production, post-production, consulting, or training courses/workshops, becasue we do all of those things! I've also written for other audio series such as WOODEN OVERCOATS, CRY HAVOC, ASK QUESTIONS LATER, ARDEN, OUR FAIR CITY, and THE TRUTH.
Since 2021, I've been a Craft Editor at IndieWire, working on special video and audio projects that highlight below-the-line creative aristry in film and television; I also write craft coverage on exceptional TV shows and films for the site and regularly co-host IndieWire's Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, where somehow I didn't faint when Peter Jackson addressed me by name. Through IndieWire, I've also moderated below-the-line roundtables and hosted post-screening Q&As with artisans.
In my spare time, I drink lots of black tea and inevitably end up scanning Petfinder even though I don't have the space to adopt a dog right now. But I've also done some sports writing and podcast producing in the past, so you can hit me up for hot takes about the EPL, Formula 1, and how the Mets fans in my life are doing (never well).

WOLF 359 is a radio drama in the tradition of Golden Age of Radio shows. Set on board the U.S.S. Hephaestus space station, the dysfunctional crew deals with daily life-or-death emergencies, while searching for signs of alien life and discovering there might be more to their mission than they thought.

In a world where magic is real but invisible to almost everyone, the few magical beings that do exist struggle, every day, just to be seen. Season one of UNSEEN features ten different stories of identity, connection, and personhood (and, of course, magic) in the modern world.
The first season was made possible by 1,162 backers on Kickstarter, who pledged $40,406 to raise over 400% of its project goal.

Zero Hours is an anthology series, where every story is a different take on the end of the world - or at least something that feels like the end of the world. Each episode is organized around a kind of apocalypse, whether the cataclysm is planetary or personal. The stories are also set in succeeding centuries, with 99-year intervals separating each episode. The show begins in the past, catches up to the present, and eventually overtakes it.

Created, written, recorded, produced, and released in just one week, Time Bombs is a new audio drama podcast about the hilarious world of bomb disposal. From the team behind the Webby Award nominated sci-fi audio drama Wolf 359, ride along with EOD technician Simon Teller on the busiest night of the year for him and his team - when business is, quite literally, booming.

Hot Takedown was the weekly sports podcast from FiveThirtyEight. On it, the crew used numbers to dissect the week in sports, taking down some silly hot takes in the process.
As the show's producer, I supervised remote recording during the pandemic, booked guests, did segment research, built show outlines, edited and published the podcast, and selected the egregious hot takes, which meant I did a lot of listening to Stephen A. Smith. I miss the Hot Takedown crew dearly but I'm also not sad about that last part ending, you know?

No Bad Ideas is a storytelling gameshow where we take the worst ideas from the Internet and try to turn them into stories that are actually good. In order to stay fresh creatively and have an excuse to hang out with each other, we take a couple terrible ideas they found on the Internet each week, horrify each other, and then turn them into compelling narratives. Or as close as we can get in 10 minutes.

Film & Television Writing
Craft Editor
As IW's Craft Editor, I look at the artistic and technical choices behind great television series and films. I also help produce and host the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, along with other special projects focused on filmmaking, like the site's Craft Considerations and Deep Dive series. It's a dream job and I guess I get to do it?!
Contributor
The folks at BWDR do some of the best longform writing about film out there and are staffed by some of the best, most helpful and empathetic editors around. They've let me write essays about ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS, THE DEAD, THE SEARCHERS, and MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD. I wish I could write more for them, honestly. Go subscribe.
